Our Story

In March of 2020, chefs (and best friends) Alexis Rice and Eve Studnicka found themselves jobless due to the pandemic outbreak. Drawing inspiration from the meal trains, potlucks, and iconic hashbrown casserole that brought their hometown communities together during times of hardship, they began delivering take & bake entrees to their quarantined neighbors.

The grassroots project soon grew into one of Chicago's most beloved virtual restaurants. For four and a half years, the duo and their team created over 200 menus, delivering to thousands of homes across Chicago. In 2022 they won Best Meal Kits by popular vote in the Chicago Reader.

After a year-long search for a brick and mortar location, Funeral Potatoes made the kitchen at Portage Park's Moonflower bar their permanent home. Shifting from deliveries to dine-in, the team continues to serve up creative and comforting Midwestern folk cuisine - celebrating the seasons, flavors, and stories of he heartland with their community, in person at last.

Our Chef

Executive chef & owner, Alexis Rice opened her catering company Black Cat Kitchen in 2018 and spent 2 years slinging veggie focused comfort food at farmers markets and private events all over Chicago. When the pandemic made event caterers all but obsolete, she joined forces with her bestie and former coworker Eve Studnicka to form the Funeral Potatoes you know and love.

Alexis loves elevating simple, nostalgic recipes and shining a light on all of the delicious food and talented chefs that exist outside of traditional, stuffy fine dining.
